Don’t Overlook Your Child’s Mobile Phone Gaming

Youths today have access to a wide variety of gaming platforms, as gaming and tech companies are venturing beyond games on console or computers. When they are bored with their current platform, they will simply move on to another one.

In recent years, mobile games have gained massive popularity. Mobile games can even be more addictive than computer games, as youths travel everywhere with their mobile phones. Youths tend to disassociate their phone use from their gaming most often associated with computer and consoles. They would perceive taking a break from their computer/console games by spending time playing on their phones. When youths take a break from their computer or console games, they are not taking a break from screen time, they have moved to a smaller screen.

The mobile games downloadable from the game stores are more likely to be freemium (free to play but there are in-app purchases) – meaning youths will not be hindered by the lack of money when downloading such apps.

Parents have noted their children have been spending more and more time on their phones. Therefore, with the rising trend in mobile games, it is important to not overlook mobile gaming in your child’s life.

A tip for parents when managing your child’s mobile gaming is to set a time management plan inclusive of mobile use.

When children take a break from their computer or console games, they are not taking a break from screen time – they have merely moved to a smaller screen. Therefore, ensure your child is aware the timing allocated for games also applies to mobile games.

You should also allocate a period of zero screen time, where your children cannot use any devices including their phones. You can use this time to engage them in outdoor activities.
